From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Set in Ghana, this British import focuses on the universal relationship between a child and a beloved toy. Five-year-old Amoko takes her teddy bear Efua everywhere. True to childhood, when Auntie Dinah arrives with a new drum, Amoko quickly forgets about her favorite plaything. When the girl wakes up the following morning, however, and discovers the "cold and hard" instrument beside her rather than her cuddly and comforting bear, she is grief-stricken. In response to her distress, Amoko's father retrieves the abandoned Efua, who has lost an arm to some quarrelling dogs. Although Amoko's mother scolds her for being careless, the woman does promise to repair the bear. The attractive full-page primitive style acrylic paintings effectively display the use of highly saturated, contrasting colors as well as flat, stylized figures. Despite the crisis over the lost toy and a few moments of gentle humor, the simply written text lacks momentum. In addition, there are several cultural aberrations, the most glaring being that Efua's father prepares and cooks the family's meal. While there are visual and textual references which do reflect accurately life in the west African nation, the preschool audience is likely to be more interested in the shared experience rather than any differences. This flawed effort is a disappointment. --Julie Corsaro, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
