Kindergarten-Grade 3-- The story of creation from the King James Version of the Bible. Baynes begins with a circle filled with murky green-and-black wavelike lines representing the Earth without form. The world takes shape first within the circle and then flows out of it as plants, fish, and animals are made, appearing as if they were being pushed along by a great burst of energy by the Creator. Interestingly, a few dinosaurs appear in the parade; at the end of this wave are man and woman. After all this activity, the final spread shows Adam and Eve looking over a perfect peaceable kingdom. These events have been told many times. Baynes's contribution is in the movement in her paintings, conveying a sense of things being made. Colors gradually become brighter and more varied, reinforcing the feeling of progress. There are nice details for children to pore over in these beautifully crafted pictures. The illustrations in Allison Reed's Genesis: The Story of Creation (Schocken, 1981; o.p.)--also from King James--are lovely, but quieter and more muted. The Seven Days of Creation (Holiday, 1981) by Leonard Everett Fisher has an easier text and a more straightforward pictorial representation. None of these can be singled out as definitive, and where there is room, Baynes's offering can stand with the best. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
