9780027172737: What Does the Rain Play?

A small boy enjoys all the special sights and sounds of a rainy day, from his early morning walk through puddles to get to school, to the soothing melody that the rain plays at bedtime.

From Publishers Weekly:

"When the sky is heavy as lead / and the whole world turns over, gray," Jon listens to the rain. Carlstrom (the Jesse Bear books) concludes each section of this quiet poem with the eponymous query and a fitting combination of sounds made by the rain and the activities in which Jon is engaged. "Rat-a-tat! Rat-a-tat! Rat-a-tat-tat-tat!" or "Clink clink gurgle drip!" sings the rain as it accompanies Jon throughout the day. He hears "Tap tap trickle slide" when he is at school and "Ping in the singing pan!" as he cuddles in bed with his cat. Sorensen's lavish, painterly illustrations suggest the work of Norman Rockwell (in subject matter) and Ted Rand (in their depictions of nature). In both indoor and outdoor scenes, the artwork glows with soft light and shadow: the reflective boy and his pet are bathed in striking, textured sunset-orange hues; beside a flower-dotted pasture, silvery puddles mirror a lowering sky. Though the text occasionally seems to strain for onomatopoetic effect, this minor shortcoming does not detract from the tranquility and relaxed playfulness of a felicitous collaboration. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Rain accompanies a school-age boy all through his day with onomatopoetic rhythms and comforting sounds. He walks to school to a rainy "rat-a-tat!" beat on his yellow slicker. He returns home to the steaming aroma of home-baked bread, writing his name on the window of steam: "Tippita drippita tippita Jon." A leaky roof brings a nighttime song: "Ping! Ping! Ping in the pan on the bedroom floor." Carlstrom knows how to tell a story in verse, easing readers into this gentle, cozy day. Her text is masterfully paired with Sorensen's luminous acrylic paintings. In full-page spreads, they are impressionistic in style, yet readers see plenty of detail. Warmth is conveyed through such touches as a fat cat rubbing against the child's wet legs and his parents sitting quietly in the evening. This is a well-designed book with large clear typeface, appropriately suited to its reflective mood. A lovely partnership of text and art. --Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
