From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-K In perfect harmony of text and illustration, Carlstrom and Pinkney extol the joy of being a vigorous, curious child exploring the delights of a lovely summer day. Exuberant Anna, a pony-tailed little black girl in a bright yellow dress, frolics through luxuriant flower gardens, a rasp berry patch, and weedy wildflowery meadows; rolls down a green hillside; hops across a cool, froggy stream; stands sturdily up in a tree; crouches to examine insects under a rock; and finally falls asleep in the grass. The text, in free verse form, is melodious with internal rhymes, repetitions, and varied rhythms. Exquisite full-page illustrations in water color, gouache, and colored pencil depict a charming girl amid brilliant floral mag nificence and radiate summer warmth and beauty. The facing pages set off the verses attractively with a border of blos soms and leaves and a center portrait of an individual bloom, berry, burr, or other element from the larger illustration. From Publishers Weekly:

Anna's solitary frolic with nature provides a theme for this simple, lively book. One moment she's running among sunflowers, the next climbing a tree to command a ship, then picking berries, rolling down a grassy slope, exploring ants and spiders. Nancy Carlstrom's text does verbal flips and somersaults in fresh word play; she rounds off each page-long vignette with a refrain using Anna's name. Among Pinkney's cheery green and yellows, Anna never so much as smudges her nose, and even the ants and spiders look clean and charming; the child's beatific face and her poses show a child who never stops listening and lookingnot until she falls asleep in the grass. The text contains little regular meter or end rhyme but plenty of playfulness. A bucolic mood prevails. Ages 3-6.
