Gr. 3-5. In this latest mystery starring the well-known canine detective, Sebastian, and his human partner, John, the two attend a mystery writers' conference. John, who is taking over for his sick boss, arrives to find that the fake crime set up for the conference has been replaced by a real crime--the theft of a manuscript. As John tries to uncover the culprit, while teaching an actual crime-detective strategy, M.O.M. (motive, opportunity, means), Sebastian attends incognito, watching, listening, and eventually leading his master to the solution. Once again, Christian paints her dog character with a wide brush, and Sebastian's fans won't be disappointed as the mystery is carefully untangled, clue by clue. Detailed line drawings add to the pleasure. Deborah AbbottFrom School Library Journal:
Grade 3-4-Another fast-paced, easy-to-follow tale that is sure to please fans of the clever canine detective. Sebastian, again working side by side with John Quincy Jones, "his human," is hot on the trail of a manuscript thief at a crime-writing conference. Witty text, accessible style, and wonderful black-and-white illustrations blend nicely. More lively than Christian's Sebastian (Super Sleuth) and the Secret of the Skewered Skier (Macmillan, 1984), this story boasts a mock mystery turned real, four interesting suspects, and two missing manuscripts. A fun choice for all collections.
