From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3 Penrod is a porcupine of particular taste and insistence whose partner in predicament here is Griswold Bear. Griswold is the inevitable victim of Penrod's big ideas, and Penrod the insouciant resister of any attempts to change his behavior. By the time Penrod has finished shortening Griswold's "almost" perfect pair of pants, they're ruined for the bear, but just right for Penrod. In a tea party argument, Griswold maintains that Penrod is impolite in taking the last cookie from the plate, but the latter cheerfully and consistently thwarts every effort to bring him aroundending up with the last laugh and the last cookie. In the last of the five stories, Penrod's plan to pull Griswold's loose tooth results in a somewhat worse-for-wear bear. Kids will love the slapstick and Penrod's good- natured triumphs as well as the attractive pencil and vivid watercolor illustrations wherein Griswold sometimes sports a handsome Hawaiian shirt and Penrod's soft spikes make him something of an appealing porcupine punkster. The back and forth dialogue and escalating action will get maximum laughs if read aloud, but once introduced, Penrod and pal will be popular read-alones.

From Publishers Weekly:

Dyer's exceptionally vivid watercolors highlight a new work by veteran Christian, author of the Sebastian (Super Sleuth) series, who tells five stories in this clever Ready-to-Read. Penrod Porcupine is a pint-sized Tom Sawyer in tennis shoes. When Griswold Bear has a loose tooth, Penrod suggests that he climb a tree, "Tie this string to the branch. Then jump!" When Griswold's new pants don't fit, Penrod solves the problem by cutting first one pant leg then the other until they are "just perfect"for Penrod himself, that is. Whether the two pals are arguing about the etiquette of taking the last cookie on the plate, or walking each other home all night so each can avoid walking home alone, they never fail to charm.
