PreSchool-Grade 1-- Another collection of four chapter stories about friends Penrod Porcupine and Griswold Bear, amply illustrated with soft, bright watercolors. Each adventure is simple in plot and vocabulary and gently humorous. In the first tale, Penrod presents Griswold with a picture of himself that he has drawn, which turns out to be just the thing to cover the big hole he makes trying to hang it. Penrod buys the Farmer's Almanac on sale before he and Griswold go camping and discovers, after getting rained out, that it's last year's copy and no bargain. Like Parrish's Amelia Bedelia, Penrod tries to follow directions too literally and drowns the seeds while planting a crop of weeds. In the last story, the two friends end up exchanging belongings during their garage sale. These clever tales are the right length for early independent readers. Since there are only two characters and lots of amusing dialogue, the selections also lend themselves to being acted out as puppet plays. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
