Grade 3-5-- When John Jones is admitted for an emergency tonsillectomy after passing out at City Hospital, Sebastian realizes it's up to him to find out why there's so much secrecy surrounding a mystery patient. The clever canine humorously disguises himself as a candy striper to gather vital information. He learns that the president of a friendly country is scheduled for heart surgery, and discovers only too late that the man has been kidnaped by an opposing general intent on overthrowing his government. Realistically drawn from current headlines, Sebastian's latest adventure captures readers' attention and builds a suspenseful mood, accurately portraying hospital scenes and pausing only for insights into the doggy detective's view on the world. Those who have enjoyed the dog's past predicaments will howl with delight at this tale of medical mystery. --Jana R. Fine, Clearwater Public Library System, FL

Gr. 3-6. Christian's hairy hawkshaw returns to solve yet another baffling crime in this tale of an African elephant stolen from a circus. Although Sebastian's human, Detective John Quincy Jones, is technically assigned to the case, the cagey canine saves the day by locating the purloined pachyderm, reuniting two estranged brothers, and exposing the true identity of a clown, Rambling Rose--all in time for the circus to offer a special benefit performance. Christian includes a wealth of information about circuses and elephant behavior as well as a fairly detailed look at the detective process. Sebastian's trademark behaviors--his voracious appetite and a penchant for outrageous (yet somehow unnoticed) disguises--add to the fun. A sure bet for series fans, this will also be popular with beginning chapter book readers and mystery buffs. Kay Weisman
