An artist whose illustrations have always been distinguished for their clarity and careful composition structures an alphabet book on a little boy's walk around a garden pond (aerial view on jacket back, marred by ISBN block). Leaving the toys seen in Ten Little Animals (1990) peering out the window, the child pushes his red wheelbarrow through the arbor, listens to the bees, picks a carnation, and so on. The red-framed spreads, each accommodating two letters, are bright and attractive, with letters and alphabetical objects showcased in the ample margins; a curious kitten and the boy's busy activity (each phrase also includes a verb: ``Lie down under the jasmine, and answer the katydid's song,'' etc.) enliven the proceedings. Bright, pretty, and appealingly old-fashioned, like well-designed alphabet blocks. (Picture book. 2-6) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K-- "Walk under the a rbor, into the garden./ Listen to the buzzing b ees,/and pick a bright c arnation." So begins the alphabet adventure of a blond boy and his cat as they spend the day at work and play, taking notice of the flowers, insects, and other creatures around them. The flat, cheerful pencil and watercolor illustrations portray a pristine garden enclosed by a white wooden fence; not a dead blossom is in sight, and even the dirt from the gopher's hole is piled tidily on an otherwise perfectly green lawn. For an alphabet book with more zip and zest, try Anita Lobel's Alison's Zinnia (Greenwillow, 1990). --Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
