These four concertina books fold up to resemble handbags, each one complete with a Velcro-tab closing and pastel ribbon that can serve as a strap. When the book is opened up, one side has a poem about the title character: the bear gets a Pooh-like view of the inside of a honey jar; the duck goes swimming in a bowl; the bunny builds and eats a carrot house; the cat investigates a box of wool. The other side shows the animal engaged in more playful behavior, though not necessarily realisticallythe bunny dances on his hind legs on a box, and the bear spins on one toe. Soft watercolor washes give these books a gentle, understated appeal, enhanced by the simple text. Because they look like small purses, the books seem intended for girls, but the stories could be enjoyed by anyone.
