Pampered ten-year-old Arabella thinks that by becoming a cat, she can avoid being sent to boarding school by her mother's fourth husband, but she finds her new life fraught with unknown terrors and learns that her former life was not so bad after all.

Grade 3-5 When ten-year-old Arabella overhears her mother and stepfather discussing the possibility of sending her to a boarding school, she flees to her room and pours her heart out to Miranda, her faithful cat and only companion. To Arabella's amazement, Miranda begins to speak to her, informing Arabella that she is a true cat person, capable of understanding cats when they speak and even becoming a cat if she wishes. Arabella decides to make that change, feeling that it is the only way she can be assured of remaining at Simon Hall. It is as a cat that Arabella experiences life outside Simon Hall and faces adversity such as she has never encountered. Her experiences eventually help her see that life as a privileged little girl has many advantages, whereupon she ultimately reverts to a human state once again. This slim first novel is easy and entertaining reading for the most part; however, the tone becomes heavily moralistic in a number of places and detracts from the story's appeal. Nonetheless, middle grade readers will enjoy Arabella's magical transformation into the cat world. Although this fantasy stumbles a bit when Arabella becomes human once again, the happy ending for all will be satisfying. Deb Andrews, Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, Ind.
