From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Jeannie and her family are going camping for the first time, and from the moment they buy the orange and yellow tent (dubbed the `Temple of the Sun' because of its ``warm gold light''), excitement builds. Their adventure has all the hallmarks of a first camping trip--pouring rain the first night, grumpiness, a fussy baby, and exhaustion. Spirits run the risk of being dampened, but Dad is determined not to give up so easily. His reward for perseverance is clearing skies, and they fall asleep with the promise of a sunny tomorrow. A well-constructed story line weaves a full gamut of emotions from excitement to disappointment and frustration, concluding with the family's ultimate, genuine joy in just being together. There is enough adventure to keep children interested, and, quite probably, many readers will have complete empathy for Jeannie, who shares her father's desire to stick it out. The full-page, watercolor artwork depicts the feelings and actions throughout, and provides a colorful, pleasant realism. : Ethnic representation enhances the universal appeal this will have for individual readers and story time audiences. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH

From Kirkus Reviews:
A realistic story about the weekend experiences of a family of novice campers. After they buy an orange-and-yellow dome tent, Dad names it the ``Temple of the Sun''--ironically, it turns out: the weekend starts out wet. Still, though the ranger's program is rained out and changing the baby in a damp tent is a challenge, Jeannie makes friends with an older girl in a nearby camper, and the nature museum is fun. Best, the sun finally comes out in time for a taste of swimming, hiking, and toasting marshmallows under the stars. The events are simple, but the believable dialogue and well-chosen details bring this family and their cheerful coping with minor adversity engagingly to life--as do Paterson's fluid, impressionistic watercolors.
