Grade 4-8-- A lively explanation of the words, symbols, attitudes, and customs associated with Valentine's Day. Combining history with folklore, Graham-Barber tells the story behind each word. Obvious terms like love and Cupid are included, but the significance of words even remotely related to the February holiday is also clearly presented. The format is easy to follow: words are presented in small groups, each with approximately a page of description. Lewin's cartoonlike illustrations heighten the vibrant tone and help focus on some of the interpretations. Students can look up specific words, but reading the entire book would be enjoyable as well. Edna Barth's Hearts, Cupids, and Red Roses (Clarion, 1979) includes some of the same history and theories, but this new selection would still be a wise investment. --Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ
