ea. vol: illus. by Jeni Bassett. unpaged. CIP. Four Winds: Macmillan. 1986. PSm $8.95; pap. $3.95. PreSchool-Grade 1 A new series of domestic adventures for the preschool set. In these canine tales, father-figure Mr. Poggle has a way of viewing seemingly-unpleasant occasions through rose-colored glasses, and he convinces the fuzzy-eared Scamp to do the same. In Sunny Side Up , a would-be disastrous breakfast of broken eggs and almost-burned toast becomes a party with the birds, while Scamp's scratchy throat, which is ``as red as dragon's fire,'' occasions a Terribly Wonderful day of sunshine, warm blankets, and companionship. These tiny tales, though akin to the ``warm fuzzy'' tradition of Joan Walsh Anglund, have touches of humor in both the text and illustrations. While the characters are basically two dimensional, their situations are realistic and their friendship and sense of caring are obvious. The watercolor line drawings do much to convey this feeling of warmth and tend to rescue the sometimes less-than-imaginative text. Although neither of these tales will replace Vincent's ``Ernest and Celestine'' titles (Greenwillow), Sunny Side Up, the stronger of the two, would be an acceptable choice for a preschool collection in need of additional material on caring relationships and on finding humor in everyday problems.
