Grade 3-5 A hodge-podge of a few facts, a little history, and a lot of trivia. The breezy, almost whimsical writing style would be more appropriate to a tall tale than an informational book. The text, written in second person, explains that spud is a nickname for the potato, but its continued use in what should be a formal composition smacks of an attempt to be cute. The word tuber is used twice, but is not defined. There is at least one incomplete sentence. The cartoon-style black-and-white drawings are flat and not particularly appealing. Some of the illustrations are black-and-white photos of various pieces of old-fashioned equipment, only some of which relate to the text. Sylvia Johnson's Potatoes (Lerner, 1984), with its facts, history, and color photography, is a better choice. Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, Kans.
