Kindergarten-Grade 2 Boris, a small elephant, is the beloved pet of a little old lady, Maisie, and all is fine until Maisie adopts a kitten. Typically, Boris begins to feel neglected and unloved, and imitates the kitten in the hope of winning Maisie's full attention and affection again. (Boris is at his lovable best when he tries to sit on Maisie's lap or tries to squeeze through the cat flap in the door.) It's only when the kitten disappears after being chased by a ferocious dog that Boris realizes Maisie loves both pets, and he sets out to rescue the frightened kitten. Whimsical color illustrations add the proper light-hearted touch to the simple text, and children who have experienced similar emotions of jealousy and rejection will readily identify with Boris, and will enjoy Jenkin-Pearce's warm and humorous tale.
