From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- Eight-year-old Kanu conducts a mini-tour through the Katmandu Valley in this full-color photo essay of life in contemporary Nepal. Beautiful, well-composed, clear photographs bring out all the colors, splendors, miseries, and ethnic and cultural diversity of this Himalyan kingdom. A third-person narrative combines with Kanu's running commentary, the latter often exhibiting a sophistication and awareness way beyond the ken of a child of his age. Romanized Nepali words enliven the text alongside their English equivalents, sometimes providing a bit of unintentional humor as Kanu asks questions of street vendors in one language and receives replies in another. Text and pictures match up well, with two exceptions: Kanu explains `` `Did you see some of the ladies have red marks on their foreheads? The marks mean that they are married.' '' On the very next page, readers see a small child with a black mark held by a woman with no mark on hers. Nowhere are readers told that only Hindu women observe this custom. Mention of the Monkey God is not clearly connected to the photo on the succeeding page, which is in no way identifiable as a monkey. For a slightly older group, Harkonen's Children of Nepal (Carolrhoda, 1990) is a more cogent work with less spectacular photographs. Margolies's pictures are each worth much more than a thousand words of text. Libraries will find this offering useful if the text is approached with some caution. --John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library

From Publishers Weekly:

Third-grader Kanu is always learning more about his exotic country. Will he be a farmer, like most people in Nepal, or will he work in the city, as his hotel-manager father does? For sure, he will climb in the Himalayas. In this somewhat whirlwind--but nonetheless informative--tour, readers are swept through an ever-changing series of locales and images. A work for this age range can never fully explain such fine points as, for example, differences in a country's various religious groups, but Margolies does a commendable job--her work may well spur additional interest in, and discussions of, this intriguing country. The lucid photographs range from impressive shots of the Himalayas to involving personal studies--"there is a sadhu , a holy man, with a snake!" Though some questions are left unanswered, this photo-essay offers absorbing glimpses of a seldom read-about country. Ages 6-9.
