Grade 4-6--In the Stone Age is the more interesting of these two books. Using examples from archaeological digs (mostly European), Martell describes life during that period. She focuses more on cultural and technological developments than on the physiological changes of humankind. Dinosaurs is a fairly good overview. It explains how paleontologists translate clues from the fossil record into information about how dinosaurs lived, and gives a quick summary of their times, highlighting some of the creatures and their characteristics for each period. It's not bad, but it's not as good as Whitfield's Macmillan Children's Guide to Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals (Macmillan, 1992), which, though arranged in a similar chronological order, is far better organized, much more informative, and more interesting. The lackluster illustrations and diminuitive format of these two books also downplays the texts. --Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
