Grade 3-6-- A good introduction to the history and rules of card games. McCoy starts with a discussion of the cards themselves, including terminology, notes on good playing manners, and tips on playing with preschoolers. She gives rules, strategy hints, and guidelines for 42 games, starting with the very simplest and working up to basic draw-poker rules (but none of the complicated variations). There are also a few solitaire games, examples for making up cards and games, and 11 card tricks. The text is made up of short, easy-to-read paragraphs, and all rules and concepts are explicated clearly. Explanations are better than those in similar volumes, and yet the book is for a wider age range, since there are so many hints and suggestions for playing cards with younger children. Humorous, decorative pen-and-ink cartoons are interspersed throughout. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA
