Mischievous Dinah struggles to remain the center of attention when her baby brother comes home from the hospital and her best friend gets a lead role in the class play

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-6-- At first this appears to be just another story about a fifth-grade girl who deals with being a show-off, having a new brother, not getting a part in the play, and losing her best friend. As the story develops, however, the descriptive writing, the depth of the characters, and the refreshingly realistic style make the book memorable. Dinah is a born entertainer and sees the whole world as an audience and a collection of props; after a few devastating incidents, she comes to an amazing realization: that other people feel about themselves as she feels about herself. Dinah sorts out her problem and changes her behavior with great effort, surrounded by people who care about her and help her to become her own best self. The arrival of brother Benjamin is treated with refreshing candor by both Dinah and her parents. The book is full of situations that will be familiar to intermediate readers, and gives them some important issues to ponder. --Carolyn Jenks, Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, NH

From Publishers Weekly:

Dinah loves to be the center of attention. Whether by changing names to confuse a substitute teacher, dancing with the janitor's broom or memorizing the longest poem in the class, Dinah is always attempting to impress her friends with her outstanding--frequently prankish--abilities. As an only child, she is accustomed to having her parents' undivided attention. But with the arrival of a new baby boy, Dinah's parents are often too tired to give their daughter the attention she is used to. And when her best friend gets the lead in the school play, Dinah has had enough: she decides to steal the show with her small part, but her scheme doesn't work out as planned. Dinah is a spunky heroine, with just enough humility to keep her from being too self-centered. A talented writer, Mills is realistic enough to realize that people, especially Dinah, can only change so much. Ages 8-12.
