Haunting illustrations evoke the mystery of dreams, in an imaginative tale centering on Benito's efforts to help his dreamless grandmother fill up the magical bottle that pours dreams into us.

From Publishers Weekly:

When his grandmother confides that she hasn't dreamed in a long time, a concerned Benito proceeds to ask "everyone he knew" where dreams come from. The responses are varied and fanciful, but Benito has his own solution: "dreams really came from the Dream Bottle," which is located between the chest and the stomach and pours dreams into the head when a person lies down. Determined to fill up his grandmother's bottle, Benito helps her think hard about "stoplights blinking and trees shivering in the wind and telephone answering machines full of voices...." Nye (Sitti's Secrets) then presents a tiresome mishmash of dialogue and snippets from Benito's own dreams and those of family members, including-eventually-his grandmother, who "dreamed she had a little grandson who took her by the hand and led her outside. He showed her how to cook leaves inside a broken toaster oven...." More noteworthy are newcomer Yu Cha Pak's strategically patterned, vividly hued watercolors, which creatively interpret the story's plot as well as the dream sequences. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 3?When Benito discovers that his grandmother no longer dreams, he sets out to fill her "dream bottle" again. Believing that all people have a bottle located between their stomachs and chests that pours dreams out when they lie down, he helps his grandmother gather sights and sounds and experiences to add to hers, and she finally "gets full again." This is an inventive book, both in text and illustrations. Soft, watercolor pictures create a lovely feeling of weightlessness as people, fairies, flora, and fauna float dreamily through the air. The child's close relationship with his family, especially his warm concern for his grandmother, irradiate the story. The text has a lyrical quality that serves its subject well and underlines the importance of dreams and imagination. A fine choice.?Judy Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
