Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Although the story of a happy early life, midlife abuse, and happy retirement isn't new in horse stories, Parnall's illustrations enliven this familiar territory. Soft pencil sketches, accented with touches of color, tell the story in double-page spreads. The slight narrative fills in the details in the life of a gray pony, named Stocking Stuffer on Christmas day. Stuffer grows up with his first owner and after a successful show career moves to hard times in a dark stable. The pony's luminous eyes will capture the hearts of storytime listeners and lap readers, although they may be confused by the disjointed, stream of consciousness narrative. They : will agonize over his suffering and rejoice at his well-deserved freedom--although some might wonder why no picture shows Stuffer carrying a rider. A predictable plot, somewhat redeemed by its attractive artwork. --Charlene Strickland, formerly at Albuquerque Public Library , NM

A realistic horse-story about the life of a modern-day Black Beauty. Given soon after his birth to a little girl (she names him ``Stocking Stuffer''), the colt grows up to become a jumper and win a wall full of ribbons. When the girl goes away to school, he's sold to a dreary, rundown stable; years later, he's bought by a family with another young girl, and warms again to the remembered experiences of a good home. Parnall's beautifully observed drawings (with just a whisper of color added) capture the horse with the same loving, meticulous care he has devoted to his portrayals of wildlife; no anthropomorphism, but Stuffer's exquisite eyes and ears will speak volumes to young horse-lovers.
