Jesse's toys seem to come to life and shape a new road as the little boy plays with his dump truck, bulldozer, and other road-building equipment.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- A small boy and his dog set out to play with a box full of trucks , bulldozers , and other earth-moving equipment. Morrill's serviceable watercolors and Pringle's straightforward text are not terribly appealing, yet the book does successfully draw readers into the imaginative play of a small child through Morrill's playful use of size and perspective. One page shows child-sized Jesse playing with his toys. In the next, he and his dog are sitting in the driver's seat of various pieces of equipment, hard at work. However, it is unclear if the two have shrunk or if the toys have grown to be full-size, real trucks. In other drawings, with trees for comparison, they appear lifesize; in another, a red bucket provides hints of a smaller scale. This weaving in and out of the imagination and reality is engaging, and it will be with a touch of regret that readers are pulled back to reality as Jesse collects his toys and heads for home. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library
