PreSchool-Grade 2-A fetching story of friendship between a cat and a dog. Miss Calico sets out on a beautiful morning to visit Captain Yankee at his new home on Pebble Point. Things go well until she misses the sign for an important turn. In the thick of a thorny blackberry bramble, the feline cool-headedly remembers that her map is in her pocket and pulls it out. Sure enough, she finds her way back to the right path and out to Pebble Point-just in time for lunch. This excellent book succeeds on many levels. All children, whether they've experienced the fear of being lost or not, will be amazed and comforted by Miss Calico's success and by her ability to remain in control in a potentially scary situation. The simple prose reinforces the story's mood and message. Rockwell's acrylic brush strokes add vibrancy to the tale and keep the eye moving in the right direction at all times. Most importantly, children will be delighted to see the animals' happy reunion.

Ages 4-7. Miss Calico, a cat, sets off one bright morning to visit her friend Captain Yankee, who lives on the other side of the island. She tucks a map in her pocket just in case. As she gets closer to the sea, her attention focuses on a schooner, and she misses the turn in the road. Soon she is lost. With her map, she reorients herself and carefully follows the correct roads to arrive at Captain Yankee's. Rockwell's paintings, silk screen on canvas with acrylics, featuring bright scenery and chunky characters, provide pleasant seascapes that match the slight story well. The map in the beginning contains neatly labeled roads but lacks some of the landmarks mentioned in the story that would help young children use it easily and effectively. Those familiar with Rockwell's book Mr. Panda's Painting will enjoy seeing Mr. Panda sketching in one of the scenes. Deborah Abbott
