Grade 1 Up-- Rockwell has once more collected some of her favorite folktales and fables in a readable, accessible anthology, illustrated with simple color pictures. She includes a foreword, briefly describing folkloric origins of the stories and her personal reasons for including them. Except for "The Cat on the Dovrefell," a Scandinavian troll tale, the stories are familiar ones which should already be available in most library collections ("Nail Soup," "The Golden Goose," "The Boy who Cried Wolf,' "The Fisherman and His Wife," "Briar Rose"). The fact that no sources are included is a drawback, although the straightforward retellings are useful for reading aloud to primary grade classes, or for sharing at home. These are easy versions of the tales. Readers who want more lyrical retellings, might prefer, for instance, the version of "Kate Crackernuts" in Tatterhood & Other Tales (Feminist Pr, 1978), which also enlivens the story with Scottish phrases and regional dialogue, providing the audience a richer linguistic experience. Yet, where folklore collections are heavily used, and where Rockwell's previous three collections are popular, this is a serviceable purchase. --Martha Rosen, Edgewood School, Scarsdale, N.Y.
