Grade 1-3-- Animal lovers may be mildly amused by this beginning chapter book about a dog who becomes a chef and saves a failing restaurant with his culinary expertise, but the happenings are fairly predictable. When Bernie gets kicked out of his home for cooking whenever his mistress goes out, he spends some time on the streets before befriending restaurant owners. Once their business has turned profitable, he invites other animal friends to join him and they all live happily ever after. Bobak's amatuerish black-and-white drawings can't redeem the bland, uninspired text. Most readers will not be drawn in by mentions of apple strudel or the idea that a ``touch of cinnamon'' can bring out the flavor of oxtail soup. Look instead to Fox Be Nimble (Dial, 1990) by James Marshall, Junkyard Dog (Orchard, 1990) by Sandi Barrett Ruch, and Superduper Teddy (Morrow, 1980) by Johanna Hurwitz, all of which are much more intriguing and certainly more satisfying. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA

Bernie, a stray, is adopted by Mr. Gruber as a hunting dog but prefers surreptitiously improving on Mrs. Gruber's cooking. Unfortunately, she's incensed when she finds him adding cinnamon to her stew, but--after a brief homeless period during which he acquires some animal friends--he finds a job as a cook in a restaurant, reclaiming its fortunes with his expertise. Aside from the unusual qualities of its canine hero, there's nothing remarkable here; still, the book reads smoothly and may amuse fans of animal stories.
