Uncle Hugo comes to the rescue on Halloween when Ben needs a gorilla to complete his Tarzan costume.

PreSchool-Grade 3-- Although Ben has his Tarzan costume ready for Halloween, he lacks an essential component: an ape. When his unsympathetic parents suggest he use his little sister's stuffed monkey, he phones his Uncle Hugo, an actor, for help. That night, a huge gorilla mysteriously appears to accompany Ben on his trick-or-treat rounds and scares away the bullies waiting to snatch his goodies. Of course, Ben and listeners figure out that it's his uncle. Smith's watercolor cartoon illustrations are adequate but unexceptional. The gorilla is more appealing than any of the buck-toothed humans, and Ben is out bare-chested on a blustery Halloween night. Still, many children will wish for an uncle like Hugo, and the book could bolster collections with heavy demand for holiday titles. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
