Grade 3-5 While this book has all of the ingredients for a successful reading treat, they aren't mixed well enough. Two fourth-grade friends, Maisie and Glenda, confront and conquer a series of challenges (primarily self-created), including readying their mutts for the local dog show and writing and editing a neighborhood newspaper complete with drawings, jokes, gossip, and an advice column. In their spare time, the girls manage to feud, make up, spy on Maisie's teenage brother and his X-rated calendar, and suffer through innumerable other calamities and near-calamities. Although young readers may enjoy the episodic frazzled plot lines found here, there are too many unrelated adventures without the needed unifying action to create a cohesive story. Pleasant if predictable fare. Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Lib . , Wis.
