In 1940, Dr. Clarence E. Lovejoy published his first book, entitled So You're Going to College. Over the decades that work mushroomed into Lovejoy's College Guide, here in its 24th edition. This weighty tome seems designed for library and institutional use rather than home consumption, but would be a useful tool to most college-bound students. After a brief introduction about the college-admissions process, financial aid, and the major admissions tests, the editors list more than 500 career-related fields--"from Accounting through Zoology"--and the institutions that offer them. Another index lists schools that offer some 30 "special programs" such as an accelerated degree program, kosher meals, and self-designed majors. Other indexes list schools with particular sports and other special interest programs, such as archery, chess, and ultimate Frisbee. The enclosed CD-ROM allows you to perform quick searches using various criteria (though sadly not "fields of study"). The meat of the book, however, is the 1,000-page section containing capsule descriptions of more than 2,500 schools. While some of the descriptions are very brief, listing only the name and address of the school, others are larger and include information on the campus, academic programs offered, admissions requirements, athletics, and student organizations.
Though it is not as user-friendly as some of the other guides on the market--the language is often stilted and the layout crowded--Lovejoy's more than makes up for it in its thoroughness. With its thousands of concise school listings, Lovejoy's College Guide would make a great addition to any high school or junior college advisor's office. --C.B. Delaney
