Grade 7 Up-The 3000 biographical essays in this alphabetically arranged encyclopedia are culled from the five-volume Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture (S & S, 1995). "...Latin America is broadly defined to include South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the historical Spanish borderlands north of the Rio Grande that are now part of the United States." The articles range in length from several paragraphs to several pages and describe individuals from the Old World and New World who have made an impact on history and world events through their accomplishments, actions, and policies. They include poets, actors, musicians, politicians, scientists, world leaders, and more. References to non-Hispanics, such as John F. Kennedy and Wilson Popenoe, whose policies or actions effected Latin America are provided in the extensive index. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout. The appendix lists the individuals by occupation and area of activity; there is also a listing for "Women." Overall, a user-friendly, up-to-date resource.
