ea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. (Teddy Board Bks.). Holt. Sept. 1985. BD $3.95. PreS Those anticipating Teddy's appearance in a board book format may be disappointed in this series. In the slim plot of Teddy Goes Shopping the bear wonders if he should spend his coins on books, toys or food or save them in his piggy bank. Teddy's Favorite Food focuses on the teddy bear eating meals and snacks and generally enjoying food any time. Part of the problem with these books is that concepts such as spending and saving money, telling time and distinguishing food on the plates may be difficult for the board book audience. The brightly colored watercolor illustrations are often static, as in Teddy's Favorite Food , where the only change in the picture on four successive pages is the time on the clock, the food on the bear's plate and slightly altered arm movements. The art lacks the cheeky, adventurous tone found in Davidson's Teddy's First Christmas (Holt, 1982). Those looking for appealing board books on teddy bears will want to pass on these.
