From the Introduction: Early in 1965, a prominent French weekly carried on its front page a photograph of a satisfied President Charles de Gaulle surrounded by pictures of Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill. The biting caption was: "Alone at last." The Big Three, who had refused to admit de Gaulle to the handling of the world's problems at Tehran and Yalta, were all dead, while de Gaulle, at 74 years of age, was President of a France more prosperous, populated, and powerful than at any time in its history. His world stature was undeniable, his career universally recognized as controversial but of historical significance. The first four groups of readings in this book cover the main phases of de Gaulle's career: theorist of tank warfare, 1932-1939; head of the Free French and Premier of liberated France, 1940-1946; leader of the unsuccessful Rally of the French People (Rassemblement du Peuple Francais, RPF), 1947-1953; and, since 1958, last Premier of the Fourth and first President of the Fifth Republic. The final group of readings askes the question, What kind of man is de Gaulle? The readings have been chosen to illustrate several different approaches to interpretation of de Gaulle's career.
