The authors' purpose in writing this book has been to provide the advanced student with an adequate means of learning how to write French. A composition course being also, to some extent, a conversation course, the authors felt that the passages chosen should appeal to today's students, so as to induce in them the desire to write about them and discuss them in class. The passages chosen are from twentieth century writers. The texts are of three kinds: narrative, at first, then descriptive, and finally, philosophical. Each is preceded by a brief, general account of the author's life and works, so that the student can have a background against which to study this particular text.
