This collection of essays traces the origins and developments of white racial attitudes in America. Analytical in approach, the readings cover a time-span ranging from the first English contacts with Africans and Indians in the late sixteenth century to the new attitudes being forged by the racial crisis of our own time. The essays are not about minorities except as these are objects of white racial thinking. The editors' purpose is to examine white attitudes, popular and scientific, and to relate these to the broader context of white historical development. A bibliography is included at the end of the book.
