(The main objective of this book is to demonstrate through a review of social theories and a discussion of research material the complexity and the centrality of the concept of social control. The author argues that this concept, which was important in classical soci¬ology but fell into disfavour during the course of the twentieth century, deserves reinstatement. Regulation and Repression seeks to advance our understanding of social control in three main ways: firstly by offering a detailed and critical account of the main contemporary theories in the field; secondly by examining changes in the modes and mechanisms of social control in Western Europe, North America, and Australia since the late eighteenth century; and thirdly, by making a close comparison of the three principal systems of social control in modern indus¬trial societies the law and criminal justice, medicine and psychiatry, and social welfare.
