Book Description Allen and Unwin, Wellington, 1990. Card Covers. Book Condition: G+. No Jacket. Photos, Drawings, Diagrams, Map (illustrator). 1st. 20.5cm deep by 21cm. Comparatively little is recorded about the Maori tradition of kite building and flying, From its Polynesian origins the bird-shaped Maori derivation served for spiritual and recreation purposes. Manu signifies "bird" and "tukutuku" the lattice-like nature of kite construction. Although widely used throughout pre-European NZ, the kites are given little attention in early documents and literature and today only seven true examples are believed to exist --- in four museums. Bob Maysmor tells the story of the kites from their origins to demise in 10 chapters, including materials used, different types, lines and bridles, flying, chants and charms and kite legends and histories. This an ex-library copy of the scarce first edition, published in 1990 by Allen and Unwin, 87 pages including glossary, notes, bibliography, appendices and index, seven colour photos, b/w photos, drawings/diagams throughout and map. Card covers are a battered/creased with small area surface damage lower left front (3cm by 2cm at widest point), library labels at spine base with sliver adhesioin damage adjacent, 5cm by 3.5cm section cut from rear cover lower corner, withdrawn stamp inside front cover, three library stamps on half title with small section missing lower edge, text block otherwise VG with few tiny ball pen marks, withdrawn stamp on RFEP and inside back cover.
