YA Carkeet presents an account of the "miracle" of Mark Twain's return to Earth with the advent of Halley's Comet in November 1985. (Clemens was born 1835 and died 1910 in the same years that this comet passed by Earth.) Much humor results from the tongue-in-cheek parody of the researchers involved in determining the authenticity of I Been There Before. Divided into three sectionsthe West, the Mississippi River, and the Eastthe book consists mainly of letters by Twain to his wife Livy. "Scholarly" notes follow each section, as do accounts of Twain's actions, all with many references to his life and works, as well as to his walk, pipe, and profuse use of ampersands. Appendixes include a chronology of Twain's first and second lives and the abbreviations of the published works cited. These, along with the preface and introduction, all add to the novel's "scholarly" approach. Mary Wadsworth Sucher, Baltimore County Reading Services
