Geng ( Partners ) is continually amazed at life's vicissitudes, its gross unfairness, its unexpected comic moments and absurdities. In 24 short, talkative, urbane pieces, all but four of which first appeared in the New Yorker , she sounds off on the arms race, the outrageous cost of higher education, wine snobbery, human bungling in a hi-tech age, luxury dog kennels. With gleeful abandon she pens imaginary letters to Gorbachev, Mitterrand and Marcos, invents a system of punctuation and wonders paranoiacally if Big Brother is watching her pull levers in the voting I changed your polling to voting, as more accurate.gs booth. Belabored commentaries following each article, in which she explains how and why she wrote it, smack of padding. Running fugue-like through the collection is her wry account of a live-in love relationship. Geng takes a premise and giddily runs with it ("I think Oliver North is the guy who married my sister"); the results are more often clever rather than truly witty.

"When Veronica Geng was putting together this second collection of her stories---following her acclaimed Partners---she wanted to give credit to a lot of people who helped and inspired her. There was the newspaper columnist who challenged her to write a piece with the words 'Mr. Reagan' and 'read Proust' in every sentence; the New Yorker colleague who was always egging her on to 'put in more writing about explosives;' the boyfriend she has turned into a recurring character ('Ed,' who heroically undergoes random urinalysis, draws up his own tough Peace Plan, and endures a scrap of paper stuck to his foot 'as one man's tribute to the Olympic spirit'). So, after each of the 24 stories here, she tells how it came about and how all kinds of partners contributed to the process. In these new commentaries, she speaks simply and candidly about a writer's life, about some of the ways that humor and fiction writing happen, about the trouble-loving work and play of the imagination." Pristine & attractive book w/sharp corners, tight binding, perfectly Fine jacket & very slight age toning, o/w she's still quite presentable & collectible.
