The three young maniacs raise a ruckus during a snowstorm as they suit up to go outside, putting on mittens, hats, jackets, and red rubber boots.

From Publishers Weekly:

These lighthearted title characters apparently aren't entirely human, but their penchant for goofy, disorderly behavior shows that they have much in common with their intended audience. When the furry monsters--one gray, one blue and one purple--notice that it's snowing, they follow their mother's advice on what to wear outside. Being maniacs, however, they obey in topsy-turvy fashion: one wears a coat backward, one places a mitten on its foot, one puts boots on its ears. ("We are dressed," they proudly exclaim.) Debut author Nagel's playful, guileless narrative focuses attention on Gullikson's vivacious spreads. This first-time illustrator balances delicate borders and orderly interiors with rough-hewn portrayals of the maniacs; the near-pastels of their bodies, for example, contrast effectively with the undiluted crimson of their spacey snow boots. The effect is one of raffish energy--the art suggests the zest of the "maniacs" without itself being manic. This suitably silly story and larky artwork may be just the ticket to amuse snowbound youngsters--and to suggest diverting playtime alternatives. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- These hirsute youngsters (one green, one purple, one blue) are not really maniacs, just contrarians. In this simple, contemporary snowy day story, the three siblings respond to their mother's instructions to put on their coats by putting on their hats; when she says to put on their mittens, they put on their coats, etc. The book concludes with a visual gag that kids will get before their elders. The easy, repetitive text will appeal to beginning readers. Rendered in a vivid palette with plenty of primary color, the cartoons depict household clutter punctuated by the children, whose tails and hair seem electrified. Pages are barely contained by vibrant borders that complement the action. Though slight, this tale is lively, bright, and absolutely credible. It will be enjoyed by story time groups and lap sitters alike. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA
