PreSchool-Grade 2 Heralded by a little bunny's trumpet call, the Easter rabbits, ducks, and chickens gather at the Easter Farm to fill their wagons with beautiful baskets. Parading through the countryside, they give a little basket to each young animal and leave two big ones at the very last house. But, when one small basket is left, all the animals search for its intended recipientfinally leaving it for Ladybug, who sleeps hidden on a rock. Chalmers' pastel watercolors are the perfect complement to this lovely Easter story. Although they lack some of the meticulous polish of her pencil illustrations, these paintings burst from the page as they reflect the joyful exuberance of the animals as they give and receive. The simple and spare text fittingly conveys the mood of the season and the rewards of giving. Ideal for reading aloud to even the youngest of toddlers, the large-print text will also be easily accessible to beginning readers. Easter Parade will be the perfect story hour companion to such non-religious classics as Adrienne Adams' The Easter Egg Artists (Scribners, 1976) and Lorna Balian's Humbug Rabbit (Abingdon, 1974). "Every spring there is an Easter Parade," the story begins, and rabbits, ducks and chickens "meet at Easter Farm and load up their carts." The farmyard is a scene of busy preparation as baskets are packed with colored eggs, wagons loaded, garlands strung and ponies readied. Baskets are given to a variety of animals, including chipmunks, beaver, porcupines and possums, all dressed in their Sunday best. A sleepy ladybug is almost left behind, but everyone is safely packed up before the caravan makes its way back to the farm. Delicate woodland wildflowers, daffodils and tulips bloom throughout the illustrations, adding a festive touch to this simple, seasonal story. Ages 3-6.
