Mama takes her little rabbits for a walk to the lake on a very hot summer day.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Mama Rabbit does her best to keep her five children cool and happy on a very hot day. As they walk to the lake, sip juice on a grassy hillside, and sail empty cups in the water, their spirits rise. The three older children get dunked while preventing the stroller, with toddler twins in it, from rolling into the lake. Later, when it rains, they leave cups on the lawn to collect water for Papa Rabbit. This is a simple story about a loving family, and the problem is in this simplicity. While there are bits of drama, they are unfinished; for example, during the episode at the lake, the three rabbits spill in and pop out with no effects--not a rumple or mud spot on clothing or fur. No mention is made of how they climb out. The ending also hints at an interesting twist: Papa Rabbit brings home a large box indistinctly marked "FAN." What great promise for relief from other "too hot days!" Yet because the narrative says nothing about the box, young audiences will miss its significance. Just as the details are incomplete, text and illustrations are not well conceived; the former is choppy, and the latter, in pastel colors, are static and bland. Readers won't sweat from the heat, be cooled at the lake, or feel any relief at day's end. Pass this one by. --Nancy Seiner, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
