From School Library Journal:

Grade 8 Up A fairly good novel about intergenerational relationships. Doc, an 84-year-old retired physician, has Alzheimer's disease and is becoming increasingly belligerent and irrational. Brad, his teen-aged grandson, idolizes him and feels that he must protect and defend him, even from the rest of the family. During a summer vacation at Cape Cod, Brad unearths enough family history to discover that his grandfather was unfaithful to his wife and a tyrant to his daughter. However, Brad's love for the old man still does not waver. This story about an eccentric New England family is reasonably well-constructed, although the plot lags at times, and the sub-plot involving the death of Brad's "psychoneurotic" friend Lance, for whom "life is a megaproblem," seems superfluous. Graber does give a good portrayal of old age, its frustrations, and its limitations. The characterization of Brad is also good. The book is more hard-edged than most others dealing with relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren. A Figure of Speech (Dell, 1975) by Norma Fox Mazer is a similar story, but its ending is bitter and disheartening. A much more upbeat and lyrical book is Hamilton's Junius Over Far (Harper, 1985), which has a more exciting plot. Candy Bertelson, Multnomah County Lib . , Portland, Oreg.

From Publishers Weekly:

The author of Black Cow Summer and other notable novels surpasses himself with this story of a family in crisis. The narrator, Bradley, is devoted to his grandfather, Doc Bloodworth, who is afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. During a trying summer on Cape Cod, Brad risks alienating his beloved girlfriend Martha when he defends Doc, who is becoming less rational. The reader suffers with the formerly wise and kind doctor, metamorphosed into an abusive stranger, and with the people who love him. Graber has written a vital story beautifully. No one can be indifferent to Doc or the many other people with whom Brad is concerned.
