From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- Schlein introduces the joy of wildlife observation to children from the streets of the city to surburbia and beyond. Through anecdotes and observation, this common animal is made engaging and personable. Focus is on the gray tree squirrel, but some attention is paid to other tree squirrels and flying and ground squirrels. The conversational text touches on history and some unusual behaviors such as migration and ``anting''; it lingers on day-to-day behaviors including agility, diet, and defenses. Black-and-white photographs lack the clarity, interest, and color found in Bare's Busy, Busy Squirrels (Cobblehill, 1991), which has a sparse text directed to younger readers. Coldrey's The Squirrel in the Trees (Gareth Stevens, 1986) boasts good color photography too, but it is dry and inaccessible. Bare's Tree Squirrels (Putnam, 1983) may be the better book for science reports, but Squirrel Watching will enchant young readers. --Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System

From Kirkus Reviews:

A well-known author of nature books considers different kinds of squirrels, how they behave, and what they look like; the book includes many indifferent b&w photos and a slightly easier text than Bare's Tree Squirrels (1983). Overall, Bare's book is superior: unlike Schlein's, it gives scientific names for the squirrels described, and it has a more extensive index and clearer, more interesting photos. Schlein's is acceptable as an additional purchase. Brief bibliography; index. (Nonfiction. 8-10) -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
