Pam Conrad wrote many award-winning books for children, including the immensely popular The Tub People and The Tub Grandfather, both illustrated by Richard Egielski. She is also the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including Prairie Songs, a 1986 ALA Best Children's Book of the Year and a 1985 ALA Golden Kite Honor Book, and Stonewords, winner of the 1991 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile Mystery. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3-This enchanting sequel to The Tub People (HarperCollins, 1989) has it all-suspense, adventure, and romance. Leaving the bathroom behind, the Tub People have taken up residence in a cozy room with a green braided rug. During one of their games, a ball rolls beneath the radiator and the Tub Child discovers a man sleeping on his side. "'Walter, dear, is that you?'" asks the Tub Grandmother, and the stanger is identified as the long-lost but not forgotten Tub Grandfather. Dusted off and set upright, the wooden man stands silently, stiff and unmoving. Only when the radiator begins to whistle "like an old tune," and the Tub Grandmother hums in his ear, does he respond. It's a sentimental reunion, as the two of them waltz across the rug. Conrad uses deceptively simple language to lead readers through a wonderful range of emotions, building carefully to the climactic moment. This book has a larger format than the first, and the illustrations are sharper and more vibrantly colored. Dramatic closeups add to the mystery of the wooden faces, which seem at once emotional and emotionless. Egielski constructs a variety of moods through a clever use of perspective and the careful positioning of the figures in each scene. It is easy to care for these characters, with their simple but pleasureful pursuits and their obvious affection for one another.
