Laura tries to make Mrs. Brady feel better when her dog Max dies.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A quiet story about friendship, loss, and sharing. Old Mrs. Brady and her little dog Max are Laura's friends. Laura always accompanies them on their morning walk, and sometimes shares teatime with them. When Max dies, Laura shares her grief with her mother, who says that "crying is better with two." Later, Laura is able to comfort Mrs. Brady, bringing small presents, spending time with her, reminding her of their old routine, and helping to fill the gap left by Max' death. Stock's watercolor paintings depict the young girl and her kindly, old-fashioned neighbor with an endearing softness. The pictures are cozy but not saccharine and achieve emotional depth with a pose or an expression. A fine intergenerational story for sharing or reading independently. --Corinne Camarata, Port Washington Public Library, N.Y.
