Text: English, German (translation)From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-4 Small Fur's best friend has moved away, his Aunt Grouch has come to visit, and his mother is busy. Angry and sad, Small Fur, an elfin-type animal, wanders into the forest and discovers a green gate. As he passes through it he finds magic and a chance for a new life as an elf. He is warned against being something that he isn't, but Small Fur is tempted. Then a new furry friend moves in, they do the same things that he and his old friend used to do, and he gives up his chance to become an elf. This is a gentle fable about friendship, both lost and gained, and one's place in the world. Michl's illustrations, in sepia and rose, carry out the fantasy element. Korschunow, as in The Foundling Fox (Harper, 1984), has used animals well to illustrate a moral lesson. Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, Fairfax County, Va.
