From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4-This second installment in a series of easy-to-read chapter books stands on its own. Seven-year-old Brian has quit the baseball team because he doesn't play very well. Now he is trying soccer. His five-year-old sister Penny (a.k.a. Pea Brain) goes with him to practice regularly because she, too, is interested in the sport, but she is too young for the team. Brian catches on quickly and rumors spread, one of which is that his parents are paying someone to give him special lessons. With help from Pea Brain, he identifies the culprit, confronts his accusor, and the team pulls together for the finale. Levy presents a straightforward tale using basic vocabulary and simple sentence structure. The mystery is easy to follow, yet not too easily revealed. It ends on a clever, humorous note that will leave readers chuckling. Pen-and-ink, cartoonlike illustrations-one or two per chapter-add to this lighthearted offering.

From Booklist:
Gr. 2-4. Seven-year-old Brian and his younger sister, Penny, affectionately known as "Pea Brain," set out to discover who is spreading rumors about Brian in the second entry in the Brian and Pea Brain Mystery series. Brian's success on the soccer field is making someone on the team jealous enough to make up wild lies, which are tearing the team apart. Brian and Pea Brain are determined to discover who is responsible. Levy has created an appealing, likable protagonist in Brian: while the boy constantly teases his sister, he is fiercely loyal to her and to his teammates. The story has many of the elements commonly used to draw in hard-to-reach male readers--a fast-paced plot, lively action drawings, and a sports backdrop. However, hard-core mystery fans will be disappointed; they won't find this beginning chapter book to be intriguing enough. Lauren Peterson
