Grade 1-3-- A story of three brothers set in Ireland, a.d. 804, during the time of the writing of the Book of Kells. They seek sanctuary from the invading Vikings at a monastery and become involved in the work of the Book, which will allegedly save them from attack. One brother, a sailor named Broghan, so longs for the sea that he cannot be the scribe his brothers have become. After he rescues a Viking boy whose boat crashes on the rocks, however, Broghan is inspired not only by that vessel's carvings, but also by the urgency of the task itself. Months later, the Viking king arrives at the monastery, recognizes the ship's design in the artwork, realizes what Broghan has done, and spares them all. The fine detail that iwa s the wonder of the Book of Kells is beautifully recalled in a lavish style that retains the spirit and the beauty of the genuine article. Lattimore's story pays tribute to and teaches readers about the dedication and years of labor required by the great book. As is evident from some of her other works, such as Why There Is No Arguing in Heaven (1989) and The Flame of Peace (1987, both Harper), Lattimore is in her element when retelling legends, using rich and stylized artwork to surround and accompany her words.
