After waiting for his birthday, Wilbur and his friend Benny have to wait some more to play with Wilbur's presents.

Wilbur, counting off the days until his birthday, is not disappointed when it finally arrives. He has a party and receives great gifts--a sailboat, a kite, and a sled. Unfortunately, the weather fails to cooperate: without snow he and his friend Benny cannot use the sled; the pond is frozen so they can't sail the boat; without wind the kite won't fly. Nevertheless, the boys discover that in any weather, it is possible to have fun together. Just then snow begins to fall and Wilbur, who has waited a whole year for his birthday, realizes he can wait for sufficient snow for sledding. The plot, while positive in outlook, plods along, never sufficiently convincing readers to care very much about Wilbur's frustrations. The brightly hued water-soluble colored-pencil illustrations have a cartoon quality and match the mood of the text. --Phyllis G. Sidorsky, National Cathedral School, Washington, DC
