Grade 5 Up-- This handsome illustrated volume, a mixture of biography, plot summary, and explication of C. S. Lewis' well-loved Narnia series, should interest both children and adults. In addition to family photos and drawings from the books, the artwork includes full-page illustrations in glowing color. Sibley begins with the author's childhood, showing how it influenced his later writing. The next third of the book is a summary of the plots of all the Narnia stories. A discussion of the geography and natural history of the land is followed by "Creatures of Narnia," describing their origins in myth and legend. "The Hidden Story" talks about symbolism; the concluding chapter deals with the final years of Lewis's life. The book is a pleasure both to look at and to read, but its contents seem overextended, and retelling the plots is an odd way to encourage children to read the series. Much more enticing to young readers are the details Sibley includes from Lewis's life. --Ruth S. Vose, San Francisco Public Library
